We recently spent five days in Amarillo, Texas. Amarillo, a hard-nosed cattle town, is known for cactus, cowboys, steak and oil. The iconic Route 66 is a significant part of Amarillo’s history. During our recent visit we went down to the sixth street (Route 66) historic district to wander around. Among the shops and art stores, we discovered a true hidden gem!

Braceros Mexican Grill and Bar is set back from the main sidewalk in an older unassuming building. At first glance, it doesn’t seem to be too beckoning. However, if one is brave enough to venture inside, quaint decor and an exceptional food experience await.

While in Amarillo, one of my main goals was to find an authentic, superb margarita. Let me say that I am a little bit of a snob with margaritas. If it is made with a commercially available mix, I am already skeptical. Thus, when the bar tender asked what we would like to drink, I replied “a really good margarita”. He assured me he had the best.

Since we were seated close to the bar, we were able to watch as he squeezed the limes, added the necessary ingredients and gave it a good shake. It was already looking promising! The margaritas were then served in local pottery glasses, rimmed with salt. The pottery glasses do an exceptional job of keeping the drink cold. Even if all you have is the fresh made margarita and no food, this is a stop worth making!

We decided to split a plate and ordered the crispy tacos (3). I was expecting simply three tacos in a taco holder. However, the plate came with all the sides, refried beans, spainish rice and trimmings. The flavor was exceptional and better than any I have had in a long time. There was more than enough food for both of us with chips and salsa left over! I did not have room for dessert, but that would be a reason to return in the late afternoon.

If you are in Amarillo for a visit or if you are just passing through and have time for a stop, this is definitely worth your time!
